The Freebird's Song

A bird in a cage
Sings so softly
His voice bound by bars
His wings unable to spread
And his heart

oh broken heart...

The longing burns within
Freedom mocks you my friend
For you know deep in your soul
That the fruit of the tree is death
But just to look is torture
Gnawing at your heart

oh broken heart...

The bird in the air
Sings oh so loudly
And he in the cage can hear
But knows not the darkness of freedom
Only its joyous song
Which fills his heart

oh broken heart...

I can see that the song
Brings hope to your eyes, my friend
And the life of the free bird seems good
Once known to you but taken away
Do you not remember the pain?
Or is it true that the song that bird sings
Has taken your mind
And seduced your heart?

oh broken heart...

The freebird's song
Burns true in the caged one's ear
And sets unquenchable fire to his soul
So when the door is opened
He flies
Spreading wide the long confined wings
Which carry him swiftly
To the symbolic tree
Where death awaits
For the predator is there
Lurking in the shade
To tear out his heart

oh broken heart...
